A Day of Remembrance

Starting your journey to seek help and to gain clarity & direction means that you first have to remember where you have come from, along with knowing what your intentions are with being better, and what is defined as “being better.” All of us find faults within ourselves & with others, but are those characteristics really “faults”, as we like to call them? Can we work together, in community, to firmly plant ourselves in the direction we want to go in, whether in life, career, or business?

A dark, winding tunnel that contains insecurity & fear.
A dark, winding tunnel that contains insecurity & fear.

At the height of my own insecurity & fear about myself, I did not know who I was. A dark, winding tunnel that comprised of multiple doors that led into dead ends plagued my ability to recover for many years, simply because I refused to seek help in finding what my purpose was. I took too many “right turns” in life and ended up in a place that was not familiar to me at all and had no directional signs to point to the correct direction. The identity that I tried to forge was not present in any capacity, as much as I tried to grapple and materialize what I truly wanted to be.

When I was at my most uncomfortable, that is when I remembered what it meant to dig deep into myself & focus on what is truly important. As much as I thought in the beginning that it was solely about myself, that’s when looking around me, the people that have been through the tough struggles & learned experiences started to attract me to what others appreciate & respect. Once I started to see the value in myself through those struggles, the attraction to what others can bring took shape.

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., at the highlight of the historical movement he energized, once said, “We must learn to live together as brothers or perish together as fools.” This was not meant to be in synchronous harmony, nor was it to simply bring people together. It’s to wrestle with contemporary problems, with contemporary solutions, using discourse and rhetoric that would not only bring different perspectives together, but allow those differences to be expressed. We must remember that through community, we can revive our purpose, and iron out what differences we are able to achieve by remembering what it meant to have communication & use our voices to the highest aims.

This day of remembrance is not about reflecting. It is to also honor the commitment to take action, which is the basis of many stories that are memorable and that we write about our lives and those of others. Through action, and through community, the promise to become better will only grow stronger in intensity and guide us in direction to our true calling. Knowing what we stand on in principle is our focal point in creating the best for our life, career, & business endeavors.
